A cop in York, South Carolina was suppose to arrest a woman that had a warrant, but he instead paid her for sex and let her go free. The cop was fired for his actions and then arrested following a 6 month investigation by state police.
Deputy Christopher Gage of the York County Sheriff’s Office was arrested on July 10 for misconduct in office. In January 2018 the sheriff’s office received allegations that Gage engaged in an extramarital affair, provided money in exchange for sexual favors on duty, and purposely failed to serve an arrest warrant on a woman he paid for sex.
Sheriff Kevin Tolson received those allegations on January 8, 2018 and decided to fire Gage just days later based on the seriousness and credibility of the claims reports WCNC News.
Tolson said in a statement:
“I take all allegations of officer misconduct very seriously. As soon as a complaint was received, we immediately interviewed the complainant. I fired Gage as soon as certain statements made during the interview were corroborated. Gage’s conduct is reprehensible and will not be tolerated this in this office. This former employee’s behavior is not a reflection of the good work of other YCSO deputies
The State Law Enforcement Division was called in to investigate the allegations. After six months of investigating, a warrant for misconduct in office was issued for Gage. A conviction for misconduct can carry a 10 year prison sentence, according to South Carolina law.
The Sixteenth Circuit Solicitor’s Office will prosecute the charges against Gage.
