Update:The police officer who shoved the man before he died has been suspended.
London police had their hands full last week with hundreds of people demonstrating in the streets, sometimes violently, against the G20 summit of world leaders.
But they singled out one man who had nothing to do with the protests – a newspaper carrier who walking home with his hands in his pockets – when they shoved him from behind for no apparent reason, sending him sprawling face first into the pavement.
Ian Tomlinson appeared shocked and surprised but otherwise not critically injured, according to a recently surfaced video posted on the BBC website.
However, he died of a heart attack moments later.
Before the video surfaced, police were saying that Tomlinson “suffered a sudden heart attack while on his way home from work.”
But then a New York fund manager who had recorded the footage came forward with the video because Tomlinson’s family “were not getting any answers”.
The G20 stands for the Group of Twenty Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors described by Wikipedia as:
A group of finance ministers and central bank governors from 20 economies: 19 of the world’s largest national economies, plus the European Union (EU). It also met twice at heads-of-government level, in November 2008 and again in April 2009. Collectively, the G-20 economies comprise 85% of global gross national product, 80% of world trade (including EU intra-trade) and two-thirds of the world population.
