A Mississippi man, who was once a Memphis, Tennessee police officer, was fired after a photo surfaced online of him voting while wearing a confederate flag shirt with a noose in front of it.
Clayton John Hickey decided to become an EMT in Mississippi after he resigned from being a police officer in 2010.
Hickey was caught by his neighbors with a 17-year-old female in his vehicle while also having alcohol in it.
Months later Hickey took to social media claiming to be a humanitarian and that others should follow his example.
According to WLOX:
> ““Generous and open-handed humanitarian who believes in helping others.” The post went on to say Hickey “is always ready to help the needy” and that “his charitable nature and loving attitude set an example for others to follow.””
Currently, Hickeys accounts are either deleted or disabled.
The photograph was originally taken at the Olive Branch, Mississippi voting area. The photo was taken and posted online out of fear that he was a poll worker and that votes there would be suppressed.
After the picture started getting shared it was quickly learned that he was not a poll worker but was an employee for a hospital.
After investigating, Hickey’s employer Regional One Health, fired Hickey and put out a statement.
According to The Daily Haze:
> “Regional One Health is committed to a safe, secure, and comfortable work environment for our patients, guests, employees and medical staff. All allegations of inappropriate behavior and violations of trust involving employees are reviewed and investigated. We take this process seriously and are committed to following all necessary steps to verify the truth.
> On November 7, 2018, we became aware of a photo circulating on social media of an individual identified online as an employee of Regional One Health. The Regional One Health legal and human resources teams promptly began an investigation into this employee and to determine if these allegations were real and accurate.
> We understand and appreciate the intense feelings related to this situation, but it is our duty to perform a thorough due diligence to verify the truth.
> As of today, November 8, 2018, we have completed our investigation and what we learned led to the termination of the employee in question. Regional One Health holds employees to a high standard. We are committed to upholding our mission to provide compassionate care and exceptional services to all. This includes fostering a safe and protected work and care environment for all. Behaviors contrary to these principles are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
The shirt had the words “Mississippi Justice” along with “racism” and “discrimination” on the noose.
WLOX spoke to a few patients at the hospital and each held concerns about the treatment that they would receive while there and consider the shirt a sign of hatred and evil.
Photography Is Not A Crime attempted to reach out to Hickey by a publicly listed number and was unable to reach him for comment.
