Cook County correctional officer Pablo Perez, 30, was charged with DUI for a three-car crash that killed a fellow correctional officer 27-year-old Zachary Perry earlier this week.
And then he was freed on bail the next day.
It happened at around 4 p.m. December 17 when one vehicle and an allegedly intoxicated Perez allegedly crashed into Perry, who was declared dead on the scene.
Perry and Perez both worked as correctional officers at the Cook County Jail, but were off-duty at the time of the accident.
Perez worked at the jail for over four years while Perry was employed there for 2 1/2 years, according to the Chicago Sun Times.
“Yesterday was a devastating day.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and our staff, today and in the difficult days, weeks, and years to come,” The Cook County Sheriff’s Office Tweeted Tuesday morning, after the incident.
Perez was rushed to the hospital with injuries, but later charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.
Perez was released from the Will County Adult Detention Facility after posting bail, records show.
A fundraiser for $10,000 has been launched for Perry’s family.
So far, the GoFundMe has met $9,532 of its goal.
So far, police are not releasing details or Perez’s level of intoxication citing a pending investigation and accident reconstruction.
He is scheduled to appear in court again January 9.
