A police officer in Duluth, GA has been fired following his arrest on a felony charge of terroristic threats and acts towards his wife. The cop claimed that his behavior was caused by his consumption of six beers.
Duluth Police Department Officer Keri McNaughton, 33, was arrested early Monday morning at his Buford home after allegedly threatening to shoot his wife in the head.
McNaughton was put on paid administrative leave after the arrest. After completing an internal investigation, the Duluth Police Department fired McNaughton on Thursday; he was on the force for four years.
McNaughton’s daughter called 911 around 2 a.m. Monday January 14 after McNaughton and his wife had an altercation, CBS Atlanta reports.
McNaughton had told his wife to stop doing laundry and go to bed. McNaughton became angry and began yelling at his wife, saying he would “put a bullet in her head” and making hand motions resembling pulling a trigger. McNaughton threatened to kill everyone in the house and said “I will (expletive) murder you” to his wife.
When his daughter tried to intervene, McNaughton shouted that he would kill the kid and used a racial slur. It was then that the child ran into a bedroom and called 911.
When questioned by an officer, McNaughton said he had six beers around 4 p.m. that day. McNaughton was arrested and transported to the Gwinnett County Detention Center. He was released on $5,700 bond within seven hours of booking.
A statement from The Duluth Police Department reads:
“The Duluth Police Department does not tolerate or condone any type of criminal behavior or inappropriate statements made by any of its officers. The actions and statements made by Officer McNaughton during this incident do not represent the culture of our organization and as soon as we were made aware of this incident, we moved quickly to address the situation.”
