Crimes Against Children Unit Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) have charged Officer Robert Milton, 56, with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse. Milton works in the airport division of CMPD.
On Wednesday, May 15, 2019, the CMPD received information that Milton provided alcohol to two young children. The victims are ages one and six. Milton is the biological father of one of the children and was in a prior relationship with the mother of the other child.
Through an investigation and interviews, CMPD detectives gathered evidence and presented the case to a magistrate. A magistrate issued criminal summonses and they were served on Milton on May 17.
Milton has been placed on unpaid administrative leave. He has been employed with the CMPD since May 7, 2012.
As is standard procedure when an officer is accused of a crime, a separate internal investigation is being conducted to determine whether Milton violated any CMPD policies or procedures.
A statement from CMPD Police Chief Kerr Putney reads:
“I am disappointed by this incident. As we honor the men and women in law enforcement this week, it is important that the community understands the overwhelming majority of police officers serve with integrity. Officers who betray their oath and break the law will be held accountable for their actions.”
