Former North Carolina Superior Court Judge Daniel Ray Green, 64, is accused of committing a sex offense against a child, according to Ashevillle police. Green was a judge for seven months in 2002.
Green now practices law in Hickory, North Carolina.
On March 31, 2019, Green was arrested for allegedly engaging in a felony sex act with a 14-year-old at the Baymont Inn on Hendersonville Road in Asheville.
Officers responded late Saturday night to the hotel “after reports of a sexual assault on a juvenile, who was known to the suspect prior to the incident,” Asheville police spokeswoman Christina Hallingse said.
Green was arrested Sunday and charged with first-degree statutory sex offense with a child, disseminate obscene material to a minor, give fortified spirits to persons under 21 and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, CBS 17 reports.
Green was released from jail on a $75,000 bond.
Prior to Green’s 2002 time as a judge, he was a district court judge, overseeing the 25th Judicial District in Catawba, Burke and Caldwell counties from 1984-86.
Green was honored with the North Carolina Bar Association’s Citizen Lawyer of the Year Award in 2018, in which he was praised for his “devotion to his community” and religious activities. Green is an active member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church.
Green graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College and obtained his law degree from UNC Chapel Hill in 1979.
