A now-former McLoud police officer was arrested after he allegedly strangled his wife in Midwest City, Oklahoma according to newly filed court documents.
Jose Diaz, 44, was an officer with the McLoud Police Department in Oklahoma until he was fired promptly after his domestic violence arrest.
Shortly after 10 p.m. on July 30, officers went to a home where they found a woman whose left eye was swollen, red, and purple.
A neighbor had called 911 and said a woman was screaming for help and asked the neighbor to call police, Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes said.
According to ABC KOKO News the victim told police that her husband, Jose Diaz, confronted her during a disagreement over another man. The victim had also indicated that Diaz forced her into the back bedroom and strangled her to the point where she almost passed out. Police say that as she was about to pass out, Diaz punched her in the eye.
Police say that Diaz actually punched his wife in the face and, also, she had evidence of physical abuse about her arms and legs. Officers say there was severe redness around the victim’s neck area.
Diaz told officers on scene that he didn’t know how his wife was injured, but Diaz admitted to fighting with is wife inside the home because he found out she was having an affair.
Diaz said he was attacked by his wife and was only trying to push her away, but at that point officers arrested Diaz based on probable cause.
Diaz was arrested and booked into the Oklahoma County Jail. The McLoud police chief terminated Diaz from his job soon thereafter.
Chief Clabes says:
“It’s important for the public to know we do enforce the statutes, whether it’s a police officer or just a private citizen. This officer made a horrible choice and didn’t handle the situation very well, and now he’s going to have to pay the consequences as far as violating the state statute, especially domestic abuse. It can’t be taken lightly.”
