A Fort Worth police officer who joined the force just over a year ago shot and killed a woman inside her own home early this morning while conducting a welfare check on her.
“Put your hands up, Show me your hands!” the cop yelled within two seconds of opening fire.
Police released bodycam footage of the shooting which includes an image of a gun they say they recovered at the scene but they do not say whether the woman was holding the gun so we can assume she was not.
All police would say is that the cop opened fire after “perceiving a threat” which are some of the magic words cops use to be cleared of any wrongdoing when killing innocent people
According to Fox 4:
On body camera video released by Fort Worth PD, the officer can be heard saying, “Put your hands up. Show me your hands,” before shooting through the window at the person inside.
Officers then went into the home, and found a woman who had been shot by the officer, along with a handgun. Police have not said whether the gun was found near the woman, or found in another part of the home.
Officers immediately began giving the woman first aid, but the woman, who lived at the home, was later pronounced dead.
The neighbor who called police, James Smith, 62, said he regrets making the call but only did so out of concern for his neighbor. He was also sure to call the non-emergency line.
“If I had never dialed the police department, she’d still be alive,” Smith said in an interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
